Once you are done reading this FAQ information, you may simply close this window
Login to your email account through the web interface, and click on the 'Files' link and you will be taken to your file space.
Alternatively, use the DAV or FTP interfaces
You need to create a website pointing to your public folder.
Select the "Files" link and then create a folder called "public" if it doesn't already exist.
You can create a folder by selecting "Create Subfolder" from the menu above the files listing. A box will pop up for your to enter the folder name.
Select the "public" folder in the tree view on the left hand side (you may need to click the [+] next to {My Files} to open up the tree) and then upload the files you want to share. (For more details on uploading files see here)
Finally, click on {My Files} on the left again, and click the "(create)" link in the Website column. If you leave all the settings alone and just click "Create Website" then you will be able to give the address http://yourusername.yourdomain.ext/ (e.g. http://user.fastmail.fm/) to people so they can get your files.
You can check the website immediately by clicking on the "link" text which has appeared in the Websites column next to your public folder, or change how the site is displayed by clicking "(edit)"
For information about sharing your 'public' folder using your own domain, see here.
Yes. The file must be called 'index.html', and it must be lower case, (neither 'INDEX.HTML' nor 'index.htm' will work).
If you create a file called '404.html' (lower case) in the top level of a website, then it will be returned instead of the default message if someone requests a URL which doesn't exist within that website.
If you have a file in your file storage called exactly {My Files}/styles/custom-fm.css and a website through which that file can be viewed, then it will be used if you select "Custom (filestorage)" as your stylesheet option for the web interface.
The File Storage screen lets you store and manage files at OKmail. You can upload files from your computer to your File Storage area, and rename, copy and delete files in your File Storage area. You can attach files from your File Storage area to email that you send. You can make files in your file storage area available to be viewed by others via the web.
The File Storage area uses an interface similar to the Mailbox screen. On the left hand side is a tree showing all the folders in your file storage area. If a folder has a '+' next to it, then that folder has subfolders, and you can click on the '+' to expand it. Click on the name of a folder to view its contents. On the right hand side of the screen is a list of files and sub-folders in the current folder. You can download the entire contents of a folder by clicking the (as zip) link after the folder name. You can also use DAV or FTP to manage your files without using the web interface. This makes uploading and manipulating large numbers of files easier.
DAV, or WebDAV to give its full name, is a tool for remotely managing files over the internet. FTP is an earlier and less fully featured tool for the same thing, but more programs support it. You can read more about WebDAV at http://www.webdav.org/.
Login:
You need to log in with your full OKmail username, i.e username@your.domain.
You must use the username you used to signup your account, not any
aliases or virtual aliases. Because some software has difficulty with the @ symbol you can actually use any of:
DAV:
Connect to http://dav.messagingengine.com/ or https://dav.messagingengine.com/
using your DAV client. You can also use your web browser directly if you're
just planning to download files and don't need all the advanced DAV features
(eg uploading files, copying files, etc)
DAV Clients:
FTP:
Connect to ftp.messagingengine.com with your username and password(note that only 'Full' and 'Enhanced' accounts have FTP access).
Your {My Files} directory will be in /username.your.domain/files/
FTP Clients:
Some FTP clients support a "secure FTP" mode which encrypts communication between your computer and our server. Note that SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) and FTPS (FTP over SSL) and completely different protocols. We currently only support FTPS, not SFTP.
Note that you may get a certificate mismatch warning. If you look at the certificate presented, it should be for dav.messagingengine.com or mail.messagingengine.com. If there's enough demand, we may consider getting a separate ftp.messagingengine.com certificate at some stage to stop the warning.
The item called '{My Files}' is special. If you're accessing your files through DAV or FTP it is shown by the full path /yourusername.yourmail.domain/files/ - but in the web interface it is shown by the short name. You cannot delete or rename this folder.
For every file in your file storage, we store the following information:
You can edit the file name through the standard files interface or through the MOVE commands of DAV or FTP. You can't change the size or sha1 at all. The MIME type can be selected from a huge dropdown list or left at automatic in which case we will determine it from the file name.
To change the mime type, you need to click on "(details)" after the file's name. This will take you to a page showing the exact size, the sha1, last modified time and a dropdown list allowing you to change the MIME type.
The "last modified" time can only be changed via DAV or FTP at this stage. Many clients provide a way to do this.
For image files there is an additional "Comment" field which can be used for the photo gallery website view mode. To access the comment field you need to select "View as photos" from the Action menu. You will then see a thumbnail and a Comment text box for each picture in the directory. NOTE: the "View as" mode is per directory, and is retained. To go back to the normal view for a directory, select "View as files" from the Action menu.
The left hand side of the screen contains a list of the contents of a folder, with:
Note: if you click on a sub-folder in the right hand side view, it will open the folder, while if you click on a file then the file will be downloaded to your computer. If you want to download the contents of a folder then you must click the word zip in the (as zip) text after the folder name.
For each file is listed
To move files or folders, first use the folder tree to expand folders so that you can see the destination folder. Then select the items you want to move, and then click on the [«] button next to the destination folder in the folder tree.
Coping is exactly the same, except just before clicking on the [«] button, click on the drop down list at the top of the folder tree, and select 'Copy'. Then when you click [«] the items will be copied, rather than moved.
The 'Actions' menu lets you do various things to the files and folders. The action will be performed on all the items that you have selected using the checkbox for each item. If you select the current folder, then the action will be performed on this folder, and all files and subfolders within this folder.
To use this menu, first select the files / folder that you want to perform the action on, using the checkboxes. Then select the desired action from the drop down list, and click on the 'Do' button.
The actions you may perform include:
To upload a file you first need to use the folder tree to navigate to the folder that you want to contain the new file. Then, click on the 'Browse' button in the 'Upload' area near the bottom of the screen. A window will pop up allowing you to select the file you wish to upload. After selecting the file and closing the 'Browse' window, you should see the name of the file in the 'Upload' area. To complete the upload, click on the 'Upload' button.
You can also choose to rename the file when it is uploaded, and if the file is a zip file you can have it automatically unzip its contents into the folder instead of being uploaded. You can also choose to overwrite any other files with the same name when you upload.
To upload multiple files into this folder, click on the 'Upload More...' button. This will take you to a screen with a list of 'Browse' buttons where you may select many different files. Click 'Upload' to upload the files. When you are finished with uploading files, click 'Done'.
Yes. You have a quota on the amount that can be stored in your File Storage area, and also in the monthly bandwidth that you use to transfer files. If other people download your files via the web (because you have created a website) then that is still counted towards your bandwidth. Uploads and downloads via DAV and FTP are also counted.
The size of your bandwidth and storage quotas will depend on your service level.
Additionally, there is a limit to the maximum size of a file you can upload which is also controlled by your service level.
No. The File Storage bandwidth and storage quotas are completely separate from the quotas on your mailbox.
Yes. Your stylesheet must be called 'custom-fm.css'. It must be stored in a folder called '{My Files}/styles/', which must be accessible via the web (it doesn't matter what you call the website, we will find it from the folder name!). Finally, you need to select 'Custom in File Storage' from the Styles pop up list in the Options / Preferences screen.
If you use images in your stylesheet, a sensible place to put them would be in your 'styles' folder, and their paths as specified in the css should be relative to your 'styles' folder.
e.g. url("images/rainbow.jpg") would refer to the image 'rainbow.jpg' in your '{My Files}/styles/images' folder.
One reason for the downloads to fail is your connecting to OKmail servers on a secure login. You are taken to a secure login if you press the 'Secure Login' button on the login screen, or if you use https://www.okmail.net to go to OKmail, instead of http://www.okmail.net.
The easiest work-around is to try the download on a regular login. When you connect to the server on a secure login, many browsers mark the page as not to be downloaded, and don't allow you to save the file, or view the source of the page. Or you can configure the browser to cache the page. In Internet Explorer, you can disable the 'Do not save encrypted pages to disk' in the 'Advanced settings' to configure this.
